Okay, Gunfen. It ain't
rocket science, so you don't have to start learning calculus to
do this. You just have to understand a few principles and
download some software.
What is IRC?
It's a live time chat
system. You type something on your computer and others see
it and respond. Kind of like some of those email
barrages... only faster.
Where is IRC?
It's hosted on special
computers. In order to get to IRC, you have to hook up to
a computer that is part of the IRC network (kind of like going
to an interstate highway when you want to get from your house to
a town in another state.) You then tell your host computer
what your real destination is (the name of the computer) and it
takes you there.
Then you have to find the
"room" address (like finding a street address.)
Luckily there's special software
for this.
Here's Surreal's
instructions for downloading and installing it for the PC:
1. Go to www.mirc.com and download the thing.
NOTE: Macs need PIRC.
2. Install it.
3. When done, start program. You'll get the window and a little box
telling you to register it.
4. Type in appropriate boxes "Name", "Email address", and "Nickname". This
will be the name you will go by in the chat, so if you use your list name,
everyone will know who you are.
5. When you shut the little intro box, a new box will open with lots of
stuff. Where it has a little scroll menu for "IRC Servers" leave it at
"All", and right below it, there is another menu. Click the button on the
right side that says "Add".
In the "Add Server" window that pops up, type
in the IRC Server box "duchovniks.squidge.org".
In the box for "Port," type in "6667".
For the description, you can type "LGM".
6. Hit "Add."
Next, click "Connect to IRC Server" button
7. The scrolling window starts giving details about
connecting to the server. Another box pops up: "Enter name of channel to join".
8. Type in "#lgm"
and you're good to go.
If you have problems, check on
the LGM mailing list for additional help.
